After receiving my undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University in Business Management, I joined the Human Resources team of a public non-profit charter school focusing on trilingual education and leadership for underprivileged children in the DFW and Houston area’s. During my early time at the company, I took on a variety of projects focused on improving workflows and updating procedures. Within one year in the company, I found myself in the Finance Department assisting the CFO with weekly updates on our financial position to the CEO. When I joined the company, we were undergoing a period of uncertainty. Due to external factors, our company was being faced with a multitude of problems with uncertain solutions, and I learned how to thrive in the unknown. I became adept at fiscal problem solving and thinking on my feet, igniting my passion for finance. My time in the finance department reinforced my curiosity – teaching me the importance of my favorite three letter word “Why?” ; Why do we think this is the best path forward? Why is this metric so important to our business? Why do we think this business function is more deserving of resources than others?” Asking “Why” has given me more insight into the business and my role in it than any project I have worked on. My experience working closely with the CFO and other senior leadership in the organization reinforced my commitment to critically question myself and the decisions I make. My time at the charter also taught me the value of loyalty. Early on in my career, I had the opportunity to jump to another company, however I believed in the vision of our company and thought our team was working towards something that would bring immense value to our organization. My company was experiencing poaching from a competitor, offering very lucrative offers to join, however I wanted to see my projects through their implementation and adoption, and the feeling of accomplishment I had after seeing work I had spent years working on provide value to the company that took a chance on me made me feel better than any short term dopamine hit I would have received from a new job. I am looking to find a company and role that I can grow in, feed my curiosity, and allow me to push myself to provide high quality output to stakeholders.
